Shenley Fete - 'Follow the Yellow Brick Road'
No-one knows quite how long Shenley Fete has been running, but some of the village's senior residents can remember it when they were children. Over the years, the faces have changed but some things remain the same - its always great fun, and its organised by Shenley people for Shenley people (though visitors are always welcome!).
This year is no exception. From 1pm on Sunday 27 June on the Harris Lane Playing Fields, you'll find ferret racing, a tug o' war competition, a dog show, a beekeeping stall (with real live shows), a tombola, pony rides and bags of stalls. Worried you might feel peckish? There'll be vegetarian food, Indian curries, hot dogs, hog roast, home-made cakes and ice creams, all washed down with tea, coffee, beer or soft drinks, depending on your preference.
Why 'Follow the Yellow Brick Road'? Well, the theme of this year's parade (starting at Andrew Close at 12.30pm) is The Wizard of Oz. With children from both Shenley Primary School and Clore Shalom School taking part, its sure to be a colourful procession, and you'll be able to watch the participants wend their way down London Road before turning into Harris Lane and on the Fete grounds.
Incidentally, if you'd like to join the roll call of people who've helped make the Fete happen, there's still time. Help is always welcome when we set up in the morning, and its a great way to meet fellow residents. You can call Guy Beaton on 01923 852841 for more details, or turn up around 8.30am on the day. And Carmel Judd would be delighted to receive donations of tombola prizes (bottles of wine and other small items) - you can drop them around to 40 Harris Lane, or call her on 01923 469501.

Clore Shalom School
We have had a busy winter and early spring, with our Hanukah play, parties and candle lighting, Tu B’Shevat planting of trees and bulbs as well as a Circus Skills workshop, Megillah reading and play at Purim. We are now busy getting ready for Pesach, baking Matzot, practising singing the Mah Nishtana and holding Learning Sederim in school.
We are extremely proud of our fabulous netball team and our Swimming Gala team who won lots of medals. We have also loved working with Shenley Primary and Hertsmere Jewish Primary on a programme of Maths, Art and Music for children who show a particular talent in these areas as well as sending a team to Cowley Hill for the Design Technology Event and a team to the Science Quiz.
Our shared work with Shenley JMI continues to go extremely well, with Year 4 at both schools working on their shared project. Year 5 are maintaining the links they made last year through visits. The teachers of both schools have been working on using the new Literacy Strategy, and will be sharing some in-service training during the Summer Term.
We are all looking forward to a busy summer term, packed with events, about which we will tell you more in a future edition. See you all at Shenley Fete on June 27th!
Shenley Fete Sunday 27th June, Harris Lane playing fields.
Planning is already well advanced for Shenley Village Fete. The nature of the attractions on this Shenley community day range from family-orientated events and activities with many stalls and attractions from reflexology and skittles to inflatables, face painting and Punch and Judy for the kids. We have a traditional Womens’ Institute tea and cake stall and a beer tent operated by the King Will pub. Many local concerns are running stalls as they were last year and as always we have the fete raffle and Tombola. The Black Lion Basmati will again have a food stall, which was very popular in 2009. We hope to have a hog roast as well as the usual hog dogs. The dog show too was a particular success last year, as were the pony riding and ferret racing.
This year we will have Morris Dancers with two performances and a Tug O’War competition with teams from local groups (including local pubs I am sure). It will be a really good family day out. The parade procession begins at Andrew Close at 12.30pm leading to the Fete venue in the Harris Lane playing fields. The Fete itself begins at 1.15pm.
The sponsorship of local businesses is very important. This sponsorship enables us to invest in improved Fete facilities. The Fete is a non-profit event and any money made is donated to worthy causes and charities. Details of donations appear in the Shenley Parish News. If you feel able to support us or know anyone or any business who may wish to, then please contact the chairman Guy Beaton, whose details are below.
We are always in need of volunteers on the day to help erect the marquees, fencing and tables so if you are feeling energetic and want to help please contact us.
We hope the weather smiles on us as it did last year.
Best wishes,
Guy Beaton

LENT LUNCH 3rd March
Mark Van Twest and Denise O'Connor would like to thank everybody who came along to support the lent lunch in aid of the victims of the Haiti earthquake. £173 was raised due to your generosity and we are sure that this will be put to the best possible use.
Many Thanks once again,
Mark
SHENLEY CRIME REDUCTION GROUP (CRG)
CRG meetings are held on a quarterly basis in the Village Hall and give residents of Shenley an opportunity to speak to the Police and other agencies involved in Crime Reduction locally. Any issues that have arisen can then be dealt with in the most appropriate manner. The meeting held in February was a perfect example of how this can work. Eight residents came along to the meeting to discuss the problems that they had been experiencing in their street and they explained how anti-social behaviour had been having a negative impact on their lives. The Police were extremely quick in responding and resources have been diverted to help tackle these issues. I am sure that we will see a positive outcome in the near future.
The next Shenley CRG meeting will be held on Tuesday May 18th at 7pm in the Village Hall. Everybody welcome.

COMMUNITY FAIR 2010
The Parish Council would like to thank all of the Organisations who came along to the Community Fair and told us about the part they play in the life of Shenley. We are extremely lucky to have so many thriving clubs and groups who give so much to our Community- mostly in a voluntary capacity. It really is what makes Shenley such a wonderful place to live. Special thanks must go to the ladies of the WI for the many cups of tea, coffee and refreshments that were made and also to the church choir of St Martins who sang so beautifully for our entertainment, once again many thanks.

Christian Aid Week: Let’s End Poverty 9 - 15 May 2010
Today, half the world struggles to get enough clean water, food or shelter. Christian Aid believes it is our duty to help end poverty and to build a fairer world. They do this in the most effective and sustainable way through a worldwide network of local partner organisations with the aim of helping people to help themselves. Christian Aid aims for changes that last to give people a secure future. It exists to help those in need – regardless of religion, ethnicity or religion.
In Shenley we have clean safe water at the turn of a tap – something we all take for granted. Imagine what life would be like without it. That is the reality for some – one in eight people in our planet have no access to a safe source of water.
How can you help end poverty and make a difference
Volunteer to collect in your street – you can do so by contacting Etta Dearden (01923 853 692), Christine Braynis (01727 827 092) or Margie Wilson (01923 853 698).Attend the joint Christian Aid Service and Information Evening on Sunday, 25 April at St Martin’s Church of England at 6pm. All collectors are urged to attend this event to hear first hand about the current field work of Christian Aid and to receive their Collector’s pack.
Donate as much as you can when the Shenley collectors join the 300 000 collectors nationwide knocking on doors between 9 – 15 May, so taking an active part in this battle to end poverty.Last year the residents of Shenley contributed just on £2000 and we’re hoping to repeat that giving. Together we can end poverty.
ACTION GROUP FOR A SAFER SHENLEY
Speed of traffic through our village and particularly on the main approach roads is resulting
in more and more accidents and it is only a matter of time before somebody is killed. With close to 1,000 signatures already under its belt the Group has been steadily working towards reducing the speed of traffic to a safer level on all the approach roads to and from the village. At the moment
attention is being focussed on Shenleybury and Black Lion Hill but once improvements have been made in this area, the Group will immediately turn its attention to the other areas equally affected by the hazards caused by high speed traffic.
Despite the frustration of unfulfilled promises from Hertfordshire Highways, who almost 18 months ago agreed to extend the 40 mph speed limit on Shenleybury to beyond the junction with Farm Close, the Group refused to be discouraged and challenged the Highways and Transport Department to carry out its promise without further delay. Persistence has been rewarded and the
Executive Member for Highways and Transport at Hertfordshire County Council has recently confirmed that the 40 mph speed limit will be extended by the end of March. This marks a significant success for the Group in its first determined steps towards making Shenley safer for all.
Further notable progress has been made. At the Parish Community Fair on 25th February, contact was made with Councillors who expressed their wholehearted support of our cause and during our discussions with them we gained valuable insight into the workings of local government which we will use to good advantage. Two Parish Councillors have joined the Group's steering committee and with their help and guidance we are confident of a successful outcome. Encouraged by their support, a firm plan of action has been formed for the coming weeks.
Keep an eye out for us on the streets where in various guises we will be collecting information on vehicle types, numbers and speeds. Coverage in the local press is being arranged and the Group takes this opportunity to thank everyone; concerned residents, schools, councillors and committee members for their help in its campaign for a safer Shenley.
