SHENLEY & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
ANNUAL SHOW, SATURDAY 13th SEPTEMBER, SHENLEY VILLAGE HALL at
2.30pm
Shenley & District Horticultural Society will be holding its main event of the year - it’s 'Annual Show' on Saturday 13th September at Shenley Village Hall. The Show opens at 2.30 pm, please come along to marvel at the produce, share a cup of tea with friends, bid for exhibits in the auction at the end of the show, and maybe win a prize or two in the Grand Draw. As well as the usual classes for cookery, flower arranging, photography and the traditional flower and vegetable classes there are two special classes for children to enter. Any child of 12 years-old or under can enter the 'Garden on a Diner Plate' class and those of 8 years-old or under can also enter the '3 Iced Fairy Cakes' class. Children don’t have to be members of the Society (or even related to members) all you have to do is turn up with your entry at the hall by 10.30am on the day of the Show and then you can show the adults how to be a winner! All entries receive a prize and the overall winner will receive the Tokonoma Cup.
Shenley & District Horticultural Society was set up 61 years ago to promote the interests of Allotment Holders and Gardeners in the area. An annual show is held in September to allow members to show off their skills in horticulture, flower arranging, cookery and photography. It is meant to be fun as well as competitive, is always well attended and there is great camaraderie.
Social events include a summer barbecue, held in July, and an Autumn quiz. Speakers are invited to give talks throughout the year, topics are varied and always interesting. Day trips are organised to places of interest, not always gardens! Recent destinations have included the London Eye, Wisley and the Malvern Spring Show. There is also a week-end break in the Spring, often abroad, and usually with a gardening theme. Past destinations have included, the Eden Project, Monet’s Garden and the Dutch bulb fields. These trips are always enjoyable and a good way to make new friends. See details of this year’s trip above.
At the allotment grounds in Green Street a well stocked shed opens every Sunday morning from February until November. Here you can buy garden sundries at competitive prices, meet fellow gardeners for friendly banter and exchange ideas. A newsletter is produced at frequent intervals through the year, giving details of all our activities, gardening hints etc.
Membership costs £3.00 per year (£I.50 for the retired). Where else can you get so much for so little! New members are very welcome – if you do not have a garden, join for the social activities, you won’t be disappointed.
To join call at the shed on a Sunday morning between 9 and 11 am, or send your cheque to Don Putman, 23, Bullhead Road, Borehamwood, WD6 IHW, enclose an extra £1.00 if you would like the newsletter posted to you.
