After a long selection process we have appointed a new Rabbi for our community who is joining us from September 1st. His name is Natan Levy and he is accompanied by his wife Ariella and two children. He will be joining us on a part time basis alongside his job as a teacher in a religious seminary. He was born in the U.S.A and in his earlier life taught children how to ride and care for horses and he has a passion for the environment. This should fit in well with the beautiful surroundings we have here in Shenley. Having met both him and his wife I am sure they will be making a valuable contribution to the community. Maybe a Shenley Rodeo would be a good start ! I did mention to him we had a riding school in the village. He may even write an article or two for this Newsletter when he is settled in the community.
At the time of writing, the Olympic Games seems to have caught the imagination of everyone where every time we switch on the television we see more successes. What is amazing is the discipline required in training to enable competitors to win Gold Medals. Our swimmers for example start training at 5am for two hours then go about their daily business to finish the day with another two hours training. They have to do it for years to attain perfection. If we applied this discipline and dedication to all what we do in life we would have a perfect World free from starvation, crime and deprivation. It proves that when our young people are set a challenge, they achieve success and therefore it would be wonderful if we could encourage more of our young people down this path.
The same applies to prayer whether we go to church or synagogue. We are going because we believe in God and we have the discipline to want to go every week to try to better ourselves and our families. Religion is a very emotive subject and can inspire deep introspection of the soul as well as giving people strength when they most need it, particularly in times of hardship where currently we read of people losing jobs and homes. The value of our communities are that we gain strength by being with each other, and helping each other for the common good.
This year is a very important year for the Jewish Community with the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel. I was very proud to be there on the day to celebrate and managed to spend a few hours in Jerusalem where I can report all religious sites for Christian, Jew and Moslem alike are kept in pristine condition. While walking along the shore in Tel Aviv there is a beautiful mosque right on the sea front which I was told has been there for centuries and looks quite new. The old Souk of Jerusalem with its smell of many different spices and little shops of religious artefacts for all faiths is a sight to behold and I can recommend an Arabic coffee or two. The major achievements of the short history of Israel is it's major high tech industries with ground breaking technology in the fields of medicine and computing.
As we move towards the end of September we shall be once again celebrating the Jewish New Year where it is always advisable to diet the month before the onslaught of the many sweet comestibles that become available, to signify a sweet and happy year ahead. It is customary that we do not pray for ourselves but for those around us and with this in mind, our little paradise of Shenley is at the forefront, to wish everyone peace, good health and happiness for the future.
Anthony Spencer, Shenley United Jewish Community

Growing in Grace
A reminder that St Martin's will be launching our exciting new initiative 'Growing in Grace' on Sunday 28th September. There will be a special service at 9.30 a.m. when our guest preacher will be Revd Iain Lane of St
Albans Cathedral, so do come and join us. This marks the beginning of a whole series of events and opportunities to explore how we can best respond to God's love and His overwhelming generosity towards us, both as individuals and as a church community, by transforming and developing our faith, worship, witness and stewardship. Invitations to take part in 'Growing in Grace' have been sent to all members of St Martin's but if there is anyone in the wider Shenley community who would like to join us, you are very welcome to contact Christine Braynis on 01727-827092 for further details. The first events are planned for the 8th and 11th October and, as we need to plan the catering for these occasions, please return your reply slips as soon as possible.
September 28th is also the day on which 'Back to Church Sunday' is being marked nationwide, and we would like to extend a particularly warm welcome to anyone who may not have been to church for a while - or at all! - to come and join us on this special day. We look forward to seeing you!
CREAM TEAS
I would like to thank so many kind friends who helped with the cream teas at my home on Sunday 20th July. Without all the support this would not be possible, getting the tables and chairs from the village hall, setting up, making the cakes and scones, doing the raffle, welcoming people at the gate and helping in the kitchen. A sum of £357 was made.
Very many thanks from Ginny, Meryl & Muriel and not forgetting Abigail

SHENLEY PARK
As we enter September so do we enter our most important and busy period here at Shenley Park – apples! We will making apple juice - available by the glass or bottle from The Orchard tea room- last season’s juice ran out at the beginning of May it was so popular! Do you think you have what it takes to be an apple juice producer? We would ask for you to be able to commit to at least 4 days preferably throughout the Sept – Nov period – you would be paid in apple juice! Please contact Liz if you are interested or would like more information.
We are also preparing for Apple Day on Sunday October 19th in the Walled Garden. Last year’s Apple Day saw gorgeous weather and 3000 visitors, a wonderful day enjoyed by all so please join us this year. Would you like a stall to promote your group or sell your wares? Again please contact Liz either by e-mail liz_ensor@shenleypark.co.uk or leave a message at the Trust office on 01923 852629.
As usual on Apple Day we shall have an art and photography competition so start preparing now. There will also be a cookery competition – details to follow in the October issue.
Look forward to seeing you all enjoying the Park – no scrumping please!

CARPET BOWLS in Shenley
If you are looking for some exercise to keep you fit and trim this Autumn why not consider Carpet Bowls. At the village hall in Shenley, the Carpet Bowls club runs two sessions a week. Club night is on a Wednesday evening from 7.30 pm until 9 pm, and a practices session takes place on Tuesday afternoons from 2 pm to 4 pm. There is no equipment to buy as the club provides it all, just some sensible trainers or shoes. The club is looking for new members ,you don't need to have to have any experience.
The club is friendly and all its current members are keen to encourage and give advice to anyone new. Why not come along and take a look – it is more fun than watching all those repeats on TV.
If you would just like to take part in a fun evening, then there is also a social evening of Carpet Bowls held at St Wilfred's Hall, Church of the Good Shepherd on Friday evening's from 7pm until 9 pm.
If you are interested please give the club secretary
Maureen Ashman a ring on 01923 854478.

'Home from Hospital' support from British Red Cross
People in the Hertsmere areas can take advantage of a scheme to help them gain confidence and wellbeing following a stay in hospital. 'Home from Hospital', a partnership between the British Red Cross and Hertfordshire County Council, is run by Red Cross Co-ordinators and trained volunteers who visit and call people on the telephone for up to six weeks after they return home.
The Red Cross 'Home from Hospital' volunteers visit, and over a cup of tea and a chat, they offer encouragement and practical support, such as shopping for essential items, to enable the person to gain confidence and independence.
Naturally the sort of help offered is based upon each individuals needs. Liz and Bev, the Red Cross Home from Hospital Co-ordinators are looking for more volunteers in the area to support the team and ensure that more people
in the area are able to benefit from this service. Anyone who feels they have a few hours a week spare for up to six weeks at a time, and wants to make a difference should contact Maggie Booth, Service Manager on 07711 085164

Cinderella shall go to the ball….
Act One Pantomimes are producing Cinderella at the Eric Morecambe Theatre, Harpenden Public Halls this Christmas.
Following a successful run of Dick Whittington last season, Act One Pantomimes were asked to return to produce panto in Harpenden again this December! Audience reactions to their last panto Dick Whittington included: "we cried with laughter", "high production values", "the songs were well-chosen; the singers, the choreography and the dancers were all magnificent" , "a fantastic family pantomime - really great" , "we'll definitely be coming again".
This Christmas will be the twenty-sixth panto produced by London Colney local Chris Law. He writes, directs and appears in each production - having produced 24 pantos in West London, Chris moved the show to Harpenden last year.
So, why does Chris have this tremendous passion and drive to do panto each Christmas? "I guess it's in my blood" he says. "My father wrote Scotland's original pantomime "A Wish For Jamie" back in the early '60s and I used to enjoy performing at school. I guess panto was just something I HAD to do!!"
Chris pulls together groups of people from various sources (including old friends, auditionees, dancers and locals) for Act One Pantomimes each year. This year he is joined by Andrew Rowdon from Shenley. Andrew will be playing Prince Charming, and Chris is delighted with the casting, "Andrew is a great singer and it's a pleasure to have him appearing in the show. He's going to be a popular Prince!".
Pantomime is a unique form of entertainment, a very British experience! It's usually a child's first time in the theatre, and it's so important they leave with the right impression - and that's why Chris makes sure his pantos are always funfilled, laughter-packed family entertainment - lots of singing and dancing, colourful costumes and scenery, plenty of corny jokes and oodles of audience participation!
Cinderella is the most magical of all pantomimes and Chris is delighted to be bringing a brand new production to Harpenden this Christmas. With children sourced with the help of Harpenden Youth Theatre and Harpenden's Stagecoach, this production of Cinderella promises to be the best ever!
